| TextDE | Completed in 1914 for Brazil, three river monitors were taken over by the Royal Navy as the Humber class. Despite not being intended to be sea-going, in October 1914 they assisted in bombarding the Belgian coast to halt the German advance. In April 1915 they were sent to participate in the Dardanelles campaign, but en route HMS Mersey and HMS Severn were diverted to East Africa where in July they crippled the cruiser Konigsberg in the Rufiji delta. HMS Humber continued on to the Dardanelles where she was involved in bombardment. In 1919 HMS Humber was sent to Archangel in North Russia to support the White Russian forces against the Bolsheviks.
